“The Italy that Girolamo Muziano, the two Brills and many other artists depicted in an uninterrupted series of frescoes is now before us in a prodigy of green and blue, restored to its optimal condition”. Professor Antonio Paolucci hereby announced the conclusion of the important and challenging restoration of the Gallery of Geographical Maps, in the heart of the Vatican Museums.
On Wednesday 27 April, at 06.00 p.m., the Director of the Vatican Museums formally reopens the Gallery, created at the behest of Pope Gregory XIII in 1581 to enjoy the beauty of Italy without leaving the Apostolic Palaces.
The late sixteenth-century masterpiece, 120 metres long and occupying 1200 square metres, is therefore restored to the admiration of the millions of visitors to the Pope’s Museums, who will be able to discover the beauties of this unique place: “Here are conserved not only landscapes, but also the memory of the Country”.
